008A healthy diet is probably the most important form of self-care you can practice. What you put in your body directly affects every system and function of you body. The old saying Junk In = Junk Out is true!

Respect your body, give it fresh, live, un-processed food and it will reward you with health and vibrancy.

Whether you follow a Vegan, Vegetarian, Paleo, Nutritarian or other diet it is important to use the highest quality food available to you.

The mobile App “The Dirty Dozen” is a quick reminder of the twelve most important foods to purchase organic. It also tells you the fifteen cleanest foods, so that if budget is a concern you can be secure in what you buy that isn’t organic. In an ideal world fresh healthy food would be the least costly, but until that day purchase the best you can afford! A book that I found helpful is called “Rich Food Poor Food” by Jayson and Mira Calton. It is quite eye-opening and will help you make more informed choices.

Remember it is not difficult to prepare quick, healthy meals. Many can be prepared in the time it takes for delivery. One of my favorite quick meals uses a cast iron grill pan. I will put a chicken breast on a hot grill pan that has a bit of olive oil on it, sprinkle some salt and pepper on the chicken and grill until juices run clear, turning once. While that cooks I toss some asparagus with olive oil and Hawaiian black salt and add it to the grill pan, turning occasionally until crisp-tender. At the same time I toss a salad with spinach and romaine, sliced peppers, red onion, cherry tomatoes, mushrooms and any other raw veggies on hand with a vinaigrette made with balsamic vinegar, honey, extra virgin olive oil and Dijon mustard. Easy Peasy and on the table in under 30 minutes!

This week I want to talk about massage. Getting massages can help with a multitude of issues. Many cultures practice massage as a for of preventative medicine. Massage can help with some of the following:

Stress: Regular massage can help release stress. Many people store stress in their muscles.

Lymphatic Drainage: Your Lymph system is an important part of immunity. This type of massage can help with symptoms caused by poor drainage of the lymph nodes and keep larger problems from arising by stimulating drainage.

Muscle Recovery: Massage can help your muscles recover from exercise or competition. Massage helps to remove the lactic acid build up that exercise creates.

Childbirth: Massage can help alleviate some of the pain of childbirth. Manually stretching the muscles, helping to release endorphins and relaxing the mother.

Some other issues that may be helped through regular massage are: anxiety, digestive orders, Fibromyalgia, headaches, TMJ, Myofascial Pain Syndrome, and nerve pain  among others

Massage is not safe for everyone at all times so seeking a Licensed Massage Therapist is key. You will discuss any health issues with them and decide if you can benefit from this therapy.

While many people feel that self-care is and indulgent luxury or for women only, they couldn’t be farther from the truth. Self care is an important part of living a healthy life.

If you don’t take care of yourself you will run out of energy to care for others. Over the next few Sundays I will address different forms of self-care. Try one or try them all. Some cost nothing and some have a bit of a cost do what you are able.

The first form of self-care I want to describe is Dry Brushing

Dry Brushing is a simple form self-care that can be done daily. It takes very little time and can be done anytime of the day. I like to dry brush in the morning before my shower or if pressed for time in the evening before bed, preferably before an evening soak. The cost is just that of the brush. I prefer a natural bristle brush with a long handle.

To begin dry brushing you will want to start at your feet and sweep the brush toward your groin area. You are brushing towards your lymph nodes so that your lymph system can remove toxins that you may get moving. Using long strokes brush the front and back of your legs, move to your arms from finger tip to shoulder towards the lymph nodes in your arm pit. Next move on to your trunk, again brushing toward your lymph nodes.

The benefits of dry brushing are increased circulation, the breakup of fat cells under the skin, and removal of dead surface cells. Dry bushing can be meditative also.

So take a few minutes and get a healthy glow dry bushing.
